The Plymouth Hotel
22 W. VanBuren, Chicago

T
he building doesn't exist anymore but it didn't meet its demise when Carrie Fisher's character detonated a bomb attempting to kill Joliet Jake Blues. It was destroyed nearly 15 years later by the wrecking ball. The picture at left is from the perspective looking out the front of the single room occupancy hotel Elwood called home.

Turns out back when the movie was made, this portion of VanBuren street was known as Skid Row and it was notorious for being a shady part of town. Urban renewal has turned this area into a relatively nice place and the hotel is now a gated grass field across the street from Chicago's Harold Washington Public Library, the red building seen in the picture. You too can visit this site and the handful of bums who congregate under the Library CTA Elevated train station.

Getting there: Head south on Clark Street to Jackson Boulevard, turn left or east. Take Jackson to State Street, turn right and go one block to VanBuren. Turn right on VanBuren and the empty lot on your right is the place.
